Privacy in the age of COVID-19: Privacy Awareness Week panel discussion to launch Commissioner Speaker Series
Privacy Awareness Week (May 3-7) is a global effort coordinated by members of the Asia Pacific Privacy Authorities (APPA) to promote awareness of privacy issues and the importance of protecting personal information.
The OIPC BC is marking this year’s PAW with the launch of our Commissioner Speaker Series – panel discussions featuring leaders in the privacy space sharing their insights on some of the day’s most pressing challenges in protecting personal information. We’re pleased to launch the series with a timely discussion on “Privacy in the age of COVID-19” during PAW 2021.
Who: Michael McEvoy, Information and Privacy Commissioner for British Columbia, will moderate a panel discussion featuring:
- John Edwards, Privacy Commissioner of New Zealand
- Jennifer Stoddart, Former Privacy Commissioner of Canada,
- David Loukidelis, Former Information and Privacy Commissioner for British Columbia.

Better Business Bureau of Mainland British Columbia’s Facebook Live Chat Series: Privacy Awareness Week
Commissioner McEvoy will join a live Facebook chat to discuss the importance of protecting privacy as well as the rights and responsibilities of businesses and customers.

Right to Know Week: September 28-October 4
Right to Know (RTK) Week is celebrated in Canada each year from September 28 to October 4 to raise awareness of our right to access government information. RTK Week also promotes freedom of information as an essential element to both democracy and good governance.
RTK Week had its beginnings in 2002, at an international meeting of access to information advocates held in Sofia, Bulgaria. These representatives made the decision to ear-mark September 28 as international Right to Know Day.
Today, approximately 40 countries and 60 non-governmental organizations participate in the annual celebration of Right to Know Day, and in many jurisdictions, the celebrations have expanded from one day to one week.
Data Privacy Day
Held on January 28 each year, Data Privacy Day is intended to promote greater awareness about digital and online privacy, and the impact technology has on our personal information. Visit the official Data Privacy Day website for more information.
BC AWARE Campaign
The BC AWARE Campaign aims to unify the various information technology, IT security, privacy, governance, and risk assurance organizations in British Columbia by creating a major privacy and security awareness initiative that each participating organization can embrace as its own.
